As part of their curricular requirement, the first semester B.Ed.
students visited shalom, the home for children with special needs on 10th
September, 2015. Staff Coordinators, Dr. Giby Geevarughese and Dr. Joju John
accompanied the students. They had the opportunity to interact with children
with autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities and varying degrees of MR.
Interaction with authorities and care takers of these children provided an
insight into the methods and techniques adopted to cater to the special needs
of these children. A variety of entertainment programmes were conducted by both
the teacher trainees and the children from Shalom which was a reminder that
these children are not ‘handicapped’ in any way and that they deserve empathy
not sympathy. The B. Ed. Teacher trainees distributed sweets and sponsored the
day’s snacks for the evening tea.
