Visit to the Hon. Governor’s Residence

           The Principal Dr. K. Y. Benedict and Bursar Rev. Fr. Thomas Kayyalakkal met Hon. Governor of Kerala Justice P. Sathashivam, the Chancellor of University of Kerala on 8th December 2015 to seek his intervention and support on Developmental Activities of the College in connection with the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the College. Sri. Rajan, ADC to Hon. Governor supported the event. Mr. Shajimon, Member of the Office faculty accompanied the team.

  REPORT OF THE WORK DONE

The study tried to find out the causes behind the intolerances in society. The study highlights the significance of peace education in the contemporary society. The investigator analysed and identified the components of peace education and prepared a curriculum for secondary school levels.

The study tried to find out the psychosocial factors behind intolerances in society. The study highlights the significance of peace education in the contemporary society. The investigator analysed, identified the components of peace education, and prepared a curriculum for secondary school students. The study concluded to highlight the role of teachers in promoting attitude of non violence and peace.

®  Summary of the findings
Peace education can help to understand the nature and origins of violence and its effects on both victim and perpetrator and equip people with conflict resolution skills. Peace education can help to avoid physical violence, structural violence political violence and cultural violence Peace education may create a more peaceful where all of us become agents for change by creating proper values and attitudes. In the emerging social scenario, the topic is relevant.
The methodology adopted was survey method and qualitative analysis. To find out the causes of terrorism a questionnaire on Peace Education prepared by the investigator was administered. Interview was used for analyzing the suggestions from experts and teachers regarding the significance of peace education in the emerging social scenario.  Qualitative method to be used to identifies the topics and programs of peace education of secondary school curriculum (all subjects) for preparing a curriculum package on Peace Education. Discussions and reflections of experts, teachers  and B Ed and  M.Ed students  were used to prepare curriculum for peace education.

Analysis of responses from teacher educators and School teachers and  revealed that , Radical ideology, Separatism, hatred and  Intolerance, involving in antinational activities, Fear and Insecurity among people , Poverty ,Injustice, Inappropriate economic planning, ,Marginalization, Over materialistic life style of society, Personality factors, Violence in educational institutions, Political violence, Corruption, Lack of justice, Human rights violations, etc can be the reasons behind such intolerances. It is evident that spiritual intelligence leads to stay calm and maintain loving behaviour even under great pressure and is not essentially religious .

Analysis of responses from teacher educators and student teachers revealed that, Governments, politicians, teachers, parents, and all citizens should advocate and build school and college environments free from violence, Eliminate racial, ethnic and cultural discrimination , radical ideologies and intolerances through education, Citizenship training ,support and action in terms of active citizens is the powerful component to prevent terrorism, Organise programmes to inculcate democratic attitude in schools, Education and programmes to develop intercultural respect and harmony , Life skills training to   resolve existing intercultural conflicts non-violently, Encourage programs, projects and research works which develop an attitude against terrorism, Indigenous people’s movements worldwide will help  for maintaining peace,  Women’s rights and women empowerment programme  which in turn improve the quality of society, Association  between educational institutions  and agencies like police, justice, legal and social services to maintain a better institutional climate,, Peace education programme to be a part of school and  college curriculum , Media, other cultural and social agencies  to campaign against any kind of extremist  or terrorist ideology or act ,Web discussions and social networking sites  to conscientise people , Education should inculcate environmental ethics and concept of sustainable development ,Anticorruption education to a part of education to  conscientise younger generation,  etc were the suggestions opinions and programmes that may be helpful to improve peaceful coexistence.
      The investigator prepared a model curriculum for peace education, for secondary school students Validated by experts.
®  Contribution to the society
Peace is a comprehensive concept and is an interdisciplinary field of study. Dimensions of peace education can be from individual level to global level. Effective education can develop future citizens having an integrated personality, to create peaceful society; citizens should have positive thinking, empathetic attitude, critical thinking etc. Peace education can help to understand the nature and origins of violence and its effects on both victim and perpetrator and equip people with conflict resolution skills. Peace education can help to avoid physical violence, structural violence political violence and cultural violence Peace education may create a more peaceful where all of us become agents for change by creating proper values and attitudes. In the emerging social scenario, peace education is relevant. The study highlights the role of teachers in promoting positive attitudes, and to contribute a better future for the future citizens. Teachers have to integrate peace education principles into their teaching, perhaps by being a role model of nonviolence for the students, by treating all students equally and fairly, with compassion, or by promoting democracy in your classroom

Commission Visit

16.11.2015

As part of the B.Ed. Course, External Viva is being conducted for the B.Ed. second semester students.  The visit by external evaluators started on 16th November and will continue till the 18th November 2015. The phases of the Viva include General Viva, Physical Education viva, & Class Observation for all the students. A few from each optional will have an additional viva with the Coordination Chairman.

M.Ed. Second Semester Exam

The University Exam for Second Semester M.Ed. 2015 Batch was held on 11th and 13th November, 2015. The papers were CS3: Philosophical and Sociological Foundations of Education and Optional subject Education.

Ezuthachan Memorial Trophy

5th November 2015

On the 5th November 2015, the Malayalam Optional Association conducted the Ezuthachan Memorial inter Collegiate Quiz Competition. Quiz Master Mr. Sibin Antony conducted the Quiz in 8 rounds namely- ‘ Sahithyam’, ‘Vyakthithvam’, ‘Keralam’, ‘Chitram-Vichitram’, ‘Bhoolokam’, ‘Shastra Sangethikam’, ‘Vinodam’, ‘Choothattam’, a total of 6 colleges participated, the winners were participants from Govt. College of Teacher Education, Thycaud. First runners up were KUCTE Karyavattom and the Second runners up were the Home Team itself.

SCREENING FOR BEST TEACHER

Screening for the best teacher from among the second semester B. Ed. Students of Mar Theophilus Training College was conducted on the 4th November 2015. One student from each optional participated. The selection was based on performance of two rounds namely proficiency in teaching and specific talents of each participant. Ms. Selin S. Jacob of English Optional was selected as the best teacher and Sr. Bincy of Physical Science Optional was selected as the best science teacher.  These two finalists would be competing with other participants from ten other colleges for ‘SPARKZ’ – the inter-collegiate competition to find the best teacher trainee from Thiruvananthapuram.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

      The 60th year Celebrations of MTTC was celebrated on 15th October 2015. The jubilee celebrations flagged off with a prayer session led by His Excellency Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, Aux. Bishop of the Major Arch Diocese of Thiruvananthapuram, in the College Chapel. The Inauguration of the Year Long Celebrations was also conducted by His Excellency Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios. Dr. K. Y. Benedict, Principal delivered the introductory speech and Dr. Joju John, Assistant Professor, welcomed the gathering. Mr. A. Prabhakaran, Director, Media Wing, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment inaugurated the ‘Educational Media Production Wing’, the latest initiative of our college.
      Other major events included ‘Corner Stone’, an organic farming initiative by the First Semester B.Ed. Students, Cultural Programme by M.Ed. and B.Ed. Students, Visual Presentation of the History of the College- Short Documentary, Re-Launching of upgraded College Website, distribution of Prayer Card for the Jubilee Year and release of E-Content prepared by the Media Wing.
      Felicitation was proposed by Rev. Fr. Thomas Kayalackkal, Bursar, Dr. Esther Gladiz, Former Principal, Dr. P. M. Jaleel, M.Ed. Coordinator, Dr. Giby Geeverughese, Associate Professor MTTC, Mr. Ambrose. P, THEOSA Vice President, Mr. Prakash, THEOSA Secretary, Mr. Praveen, College Union Chairman, Mrs. Saramma Chacko, PTA Vice President. Mr. Laji Varghese, Asst. Prof. MTTC delivered the Vote Of Thanks. The function wound up with a rendition of the College Anthem following which refreshments were served to the students and all the invited guests and Staff of the College were treated to a scrumptious meal.

Extension Activities by Faculty Members

Dr. T. P. Jose, Associate Professor in Physical Education, submitted the research report on “Effects of yogic exercises on learning disabilities”, the major research project funded by UGC in April 2015.

Dr. K. Y. Benedict, the Principal gave the key note address on the topic 'e-Learning Technology' at Aditnar College of Arts and Science Thiruthenthur on 11-09.2015

Dr. Giby Geevarughese, Associate Professor, received nomination to the College Management Council from the Archbishop Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos.

Dr. Joju John, Assistant Professor, addressed 300 teachers of the Holy Family Sisters, Thrissur on the topic, ‘Training in Art of Teaching’ in August 22nd 2015.


Ms. Anu Rachel Jogi, Assistant Professor M.Ed. Department, presented paper titled, ‘Awareness on Neuromyths in Education among Teachers’ at the UGC sponsored National Seminar ‘Professionalizing Psychology, Current Trends’ held in KE College of Arts and Science, Mannanam.

Awareness Programme by Snake master Vava Suresh

A special awareness programme on snakes was organized by second semester Natural Science Association, Green Café.  The highlight of the the programme was the talk by professional snake catcher Vava Suresh who exhibited live snakes to create awareness about  one of the most feared creatures on earth . An array of both venomous and non venomous snakes were exhibited which ranged from the harmless rat snake and water snake to the fearsome viper, cobra and python. His passion and concern for the snakes helped in understanding that snakes are also creations of nature and that they  have a rightful place in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem
 


 
 
 

Nature trip

The one day trip for the B. Ed. Second semester students were conducted on the 11th September. The students were accompanied by Dr. Joju John and Mrs. Deepthi Elizabeth Mathew to Peppara dam and Palode Botanical Garden. At the Peppara dam, with the assistance of the Forest Dept.  a nature walk was arranged. The students were allowed to walk about half a kilometer into the forest where the site of nature camp was set up by the authorities. On the way they were introduced to a few of the many flora and fauna that populates and maintains the balance of the ecosystem.

After lunch the team was taken to Palode Botanical garden, which is a treasure trove of fantastic greens that are literally the life givers of the entire planet. The special research wing of the garden was also visited where a lot of high end research is being conducted on the latest developments in field of science with special focus on hybrids and biotechnology. 

Social visit to Shalom

As part of their curricular requirement, the first semester B.Ed. students visited shalom, the home for children with special needs on 10th September, 2015. Staff Coordinators, Dr. Giby Geevarughese and Dr. Joju John accompanied the students. They had the opportunity to interact with children with autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities and varying degrees of MR. Interaction with authorities and care takers of these children provided an insight into the methods and techniques adopted to cater to the special needs of these children. A variety of entertainment programmes were conducted by both the teacher trainees and the children from Shalom which was a reminder that these children are not ‘handicapped’ in any way and that they deserve empathy not sympathy. The B. Ed. Teacher trainees distributed sweets and sponsored the day’s snacks for the evening tea.
 
 
 

 

Cultural visit to Heritage sites

The first semester B.Ed. students visited Kuthiramalika and Rangavilasom palace, heritage sites in the heart of the city on 11th September. Dr. Bindu D. and Dr. Ancy A.S. accompanied the students for the visit which is one of the requirements included in the newly revised curriculum. Kuthiramalika, an architectural structure that portrays the excellence of workmanship in the erstwhile Travancore era is always an awe inspiring view. The students were given a tour of the palace with the guide who explained both the architectural and historic importance of the palace and its previous occupants. This was followed by a tour of the art and photo gallery where the paintings and photographs of the Royal Family along with various royal artifacts were preserved behind specially constructed glass chambers. The trip was a reminder of the glory of the bygone era.
 

 

Dreams and Innovations

On the 9th September, 2015 the second semester students of Physical Science students conducted an exhibition titled ‘Dreams and Innovations’. The students presented models of the classroom of their dreams, some of which were futuristic and others environment friendly. All the dreams had one common goal, providing the best learning experience e to the pupil. The exhibits also included innovative evaluative tools and learning aids such as game based group activities, computer assisted quizzing, and toy like learning aids. The overflow of creative ideas presented in the exhibition was definitely inspiring to both teachers and students who came.  Special appreciation is due to the students for their efforts.

Teacher’s day

A tribute to our former president Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the teacher’s day, was celebrated in the college on the 7th September. The College Union Chairman made a video presentation and gave away mementos to all the teachers.

Retreat for the M.Ed. students

04.09.2015

On the 4th September, 2015 both the first semester and second semester M.Ed. students along with their teachers went on a trip to the backwaters of Alappuzha. It was an opportunity for the first semester students to mingle with the seniors and a well deserved break for the second semester students from the hectic thesis work. The boat trip, the beautiful scenery, the large expanse of water and fresh breeze was all a balm to the body, mind and soul.
